Burchard Elected to ASCI

Esteban Gonzalez Burchard, MD, MPH, was elected in spring 2009 to the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI). Established in 1908, the ASCI is one of the oldest medical honor societies in the US. More than 2,800 physician-scientists from all medical specialties are elected members of the Society based upon their records of achievement in biomedical research.

Burchard is as associate professor in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, which is a joint department of the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine. His research focuses on identifying genetic risk factors for asthma in ethnically diverse populations. He is an international leader in the genetic epidemiology of diseases in minority populations. In addition, he co-directs the UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center's DNA Banking Facility.

Gonzalez earned an MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine and completed clinical training in internal medicine at Harvard University's Brigham and Women's Hospital. He received pulmonary/critical care medicine training at UCSF. Burchard also completed clinical research training at the Harvard School of Public Health. He joined the UCSF faculty in 2001.
